The company originated in Birmingham, England, in 1860 as a manufacturer of knitting needles under the name Stratnoid. It entered the cosmetics-accessory business in 1923, initially assembling compact components imported from the United States. By the early 1930s, Stratton had become so successful that it was producing roughly half of the powder compacts used by the British cosmetics industry.
Some milestones:
- Based in Birmingham, the center of Britain\'s jewelry and metalworking trade.
- Survived major wartime damage when four of its five factories were destroyed during the Blitz.
- Patented the famous self-opening inner lid in 1948, one of the most recognizable Stratton features.
- Produced not only compacts but lipstick holders, cigarette cases, pillboxes, cufflinks, and costume jewelry.
- Acquired competitors such as Kigu and Mascot during the industry\'s decline
Girey is much less documented than Stratton. From surviving examples, advertisements, and collector records, Girey appears to have been an American compact manufacturer active primarily during the 1930s and 1940s. Their products are frequently marked \"Girey\" and are especially known for:
- Art Deco styling
- Celluloid-covered compacts
- Combined powder, rouge, mirror, and lipstick cases
Many surviving Girey compacts contain original puffs embroidered with the Girey name, which helps authenticate them
