RARE 2nd Marine Division Sergeant Major Challenge Coin | First Generation | Circa 1990s
An exceptionally rare and highly desirable piece of early Marine Corps challenge coin history!
Offered here is an original 2nd Marine Division Sergeant Major challenge coin, believed to date to the early to mid-1990s. Based on its construction, design characteristics, and the collection from which it was acquired, this appears to be a first-generation Marine Corps challenge coin from the period when challenge coins were beginning to gain widespread popularity throughout the Marine Corps.
This particular style of coin was relatively common among units and senior enlisted leadership aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, during the early to mid-1990s. Its traditional antique brass finish, simple raised design, and understated construction are characteristic of that early era of Marine Corps challenge coin collecting.
The obverse features the historic 2nd Marine Division insignia with the motto “FOLLOW ME.” The reverse displays the Sergeant Major rank insignia surrounded by “PRESENTED BY” and “SERGEANT MAJOR 2D MARINE DIVISION.”
Unlike modern mass-produced challenge coins, early examples such as this were typically produced in relatively limited quantities and presented personally by senior leadership. Surviving examples are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly those associated with senior enlisted leadership at the division level.
