This striking piece of rare Brilliant petrified wood comes from Brilliant, Marion County, Alabama. Weighing 245 grams (8 ⅝ oz) it features an exceptional combination of larger sparkling quartz crystals, intricate lace-like formations and richly textured areas that make it especially interesting from nearly every angle.
What really sets this specimen apart is the variety within the crystal growth. Across the surface are crystals ranging from clear and light champagne tones to much darker smoky brown, with some crystals noticeably larger and more defined than the fine druzy typically seen on this material. The different colors, crystal sizes and recessed pockets create wonderful depth and give the piece an almost cavernous appearance in places.
Running through and above the crystal-covered surfaces are raised, branching lace-like formations. These structures add another dimension to the specimen and beautifully preserve some of the unusual internal features for which Brilliant petrified wood is known. The reverse side is also heavily crystallized, making this an attractive specimen from either direction. Under UV light, portions of the specimen show fluorescence, adding another interesting feature to an already unusual piece.
Brilliant Wood has long been prized by collectors because the material is recovered only from a limited area around the town of Brilliant, Alabama. Unlike many classic mineral localities that produced specimens for decades through commercial mining, new examples of Brilliant Wood appear only intermittently from small private digs and landowner excavations, making quality display pieces increasingly difficult to obtain.
