Offered up for sale is a highly desirable, original 1st Pattern G-1 Flight Jacket manufactured by the Flying Equipment Company of Chicago. Featuring the early 55J14 (AER) pattern specification. This jacket is constructed from remarkably supple, premium goatskin leather that retains excellent grain, tight structural stitching, and a fully functional bi-swing action back. It is a true, wearable size 46—evidenced by the ghostly black numbers still legible on the original factory label, which is currently hanging on by a few threads. This jacket was clearly a trusted piece of regular duty gear, featuring a historic shield-shaped ghost patch shadow on the left shoulder where the seam meets the arm, structurally resembling a mid-century Civil Air Patrol or federal insignia. Further cementing its unique history, the standard brown factory plastic buttons were replaced during its service era with official, gold-plated municipal police uniform buttons. These are stamped with the famous Waterbury backmark and feature the iconic Gothic "P" inside a laurel wreath (Pattern #29306), perfectly dating the uniform customization to the late 1940s or early 1950s.
Condition is honestly presented for restoration or archival display. The main Talon zipper functions smoothly and retains its original, 80-year-old factory leather pull thong; however, the thong is brittle with checking down to its centerline and should not be pulled. The wool wrist cuffs are torn and the waistband is stretched from regular use, making this an absolute prime candidate for a straightforward knit replacement. The mouton collar shows standard, minor wear directly along the edges, and the smooth inner lining has the typical tear located just above the main label. Honest, minor surface abrasions consistent with genuine age are present on the goatskin and are fully detailed in the accompanying photographs. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a robust, golden-size "hull" of a premier early-pattern G-1 with fantastic historical character.
