19thCentury 19” Folk Art Toleware Wooden Urn Handpainted Bird Panels Adirondacks For Sale

Antique 19” tall 19th-century toleware wooden urn with handpainted bird panels. Remarkable piece, seemingly hand-carved from a single seamless block of walnut wood, dappled to resemble tiger’s eye maple. Neoclassical finial and two carved lion’s heads with brass rings fused to the sides. Base ringed in black painted wood. The bird tableaux are primitive and beautifully detailed. This was purchased in the Northern Adirondacks, and likely dates to the latter half of the 19th century, but may perhaps be earlier. I’ve never seen another urn that remotely resembles this in over 30 years of antiquing throughout New York and New England. Large piece, measuring 19” tall and 11” across at its widest. In excellent condition save for some light soiling to the panels and a couple teeny scrapes.
