Biography – Senator Jesse Helms
Jesse Alexander Helms Jr. (1921–2008) was one of the most influential and controversial American conservative politicians of the late 20th century. He served as U.S. Senator from North Carolina for five terms (1973–2003) and was a central figure in shaping conservative policy on foreign affairs, national defense, and social issues.
Helms was Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (1995–2001), a position that gave him major influence over U.S. foreign policy, international treaties, and diplomatic appointments. He was a leading voice during the Cold War, strongly opposed communism, and played a significant role in U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union, Cuba, and the Middle East.
Beyond politics, Helms maintained relationships with leaders of various religious communities and was attentive to Jewish affairs and U.S.–Israel relations.
