1991 Vintage Press Photo by TIMES PICAYUNE.Women arrive at Camp Plauche for USO dance in 1944.During World War II, when gasoline rationing was in effect, young single women who wanted to attend USO dances had a problem with transportation, so Uncle Sam often came to the rescue.

Dances were held at the USO Center at Canal and Carondelet Streets, for the United States Navy Base in Algiers, and at Camp Leroy Johnson at Franklin Avenue and the Lake.
Lee identified the four women about to help off the truck as, from left:1. Beverly Castellano
