Hill was born in 1956 in Lone Tree, Oklahoma, the youngest of thirteen children in a farming family. She earned her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and her law degree from Yale Law School. She then worked under Clarence Thomas at the U.S. Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before becoming a law professor at the University of Oklahoma. In October 1991, Hill testified before an all-male Senate Judiciary Committee during Thomas\'s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, describing his unwanted sexual conduct toward her. The nationally televised hearings drew intense scrutiny of how senators questioned her, and Thomas was confirmed by a narrow 52–48 vote. Public backlash over the hearings helped fuel the 1992 \"Year of the Woman,\" when a record number of women were elected to the U.S. Senate. The hearings were also followed by a sharp rise in harassment complaints filed with the EEOC. Hill later became a longtime professor of social policy, law, and women\'s studies at Brandeis University. She wrote the books Speaking Truth to Power, Reimagining Equality, and Believing, and in 2017 she was named chair of the Hollywood Commission, which works to end workplace harassment. Her story was told in the 2013 documentary Anita and the 2016 HBO film Confirmation, and she remains a defining figure in the history of civil rights, gender equality, and American politics.
