Description

This is a vintage Japanese wood carving of an Ainu bear (Kibori Kuma), a traditional folk art piece from Hokkaido.

Ainu bear carvings are iconic souvenirs and artworks from northern Japan, often depicting a powerful bear holding a salmon, symbolizing nature’s abundance and strength.

This piece is inscribed on the bottom:
“Noboribetsu, June 12, Heisei 1 (1989)”
This marking indicates it was made or acquired in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, in 1989, adding historical and regional significance.

The carving is skillfully handcrafted from solid wood, showing detailed fur texture and a dynamic pose. It has a strong presence and makes an excellent display sculpture.

Condition:
