Suzuki\'s tiny three-wheeler gets the full racing treatment here. A completely crazed hot-pink mutant with bulging bloodshot eyes, enormous teeth and a towering yellow mohawk is tucked over the handlebars while the yellow-and-blue ALT50 tears around a stadium circuit. The little Trail Buddy is throwing an absurd cloud of tire smoke and debris as though its 49cc engine suddenly thinks it\'s competing for a championship.

Bold graffiti-inspired 1984 SUZUKI artwork fills the upper portion, while ALT50 TRAIL BUDDY and MONSTERS ON MACHINES dominate the bottom.

The Little Suzuki Trail Buddy

The ALT50 Trail Buddy was Suzuki\'s miniature youth three-wheeler from the early 1980s, appearing for the 1983 and 1984 model years. Suzuki factory literature and service information survive for the ALT50, making this odd little machine a documented part of the company\'s early ATV history.

At the heart of the Trail Buddy was a tiny 49cc air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine. Rather than requiring a young rider to manage a manual clutch and gearbox, Suzuki equipped it with a single-speed automatic transmission and centrifugal clutch.

Starting was equally straightforward: give the recoil starter a pull and the little two-stroke was ready to go.

The ALT50 also featured oil injection, eliminating the need to manually premix gasoline and two-stroke oil for normal operation. Power was delivered to the rear axle through an enclosed chain-drive arrangement.

The chassis was deliberately simple. There was no conventional suspension, with the large low-pressure tires providing much of the cushioning between rider and terrain. Small 6-inch wheels and the compact chassis gave the Trail Buddy its unmistakable stubby proportions.

Braking was handled at the rear, while the wide rear tires and single front wheel created the classic three-wheeler layout that instantly identifies the machine as a product of the early ATV era.

Classic Yellow & Blue Suzuki

Perhaps the most memorable part of the ALT50 is its appearance.

The combination of bright yellow bodywork, blue seat and blue Suzuki graphics is pure early-\'80s Japanese powersports styling. Despite being one of Suzuki\'s smallest off-road machines, it looked like it belonged to the same family as the company\'s larger dirt bikes and ATVs.

Its size also makes surviving examples particularly nostalgic. For some riders, machines like the ALT50 weren\'t something they admired in a magazine—they were the first gasoline-powered off-road machines they actually got to ride.

That gives the Trail Buddy an appeal far beyond its tiny displacement. Collectors today preserve and restore them alongside considerably faster three-wheelers and sport ATVs.

And with only a brief production period, the ALT50 is nowhere near as commonly encountered as the better-known three-wheelers from Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki.

That\'s exactly the sort of machine that belongs in Monsters on Machines.

This print makes a great display piece for a Suzuki collector, Trail Buddy owner, vintage three-wheeler enthusiast, ATV collector, two-stroke fan or anyone who remembers riding one of these little machines as a kid.

Perfect for a garage, workshop, powersports room, office, game room, man cave or vintage ATV display.
