The Halekulani began in 1907 as a residential hotel on Robert Lewers's Waikiki beachfront — a house and five bungalows — and took its Hawaiian name, meaning "house befitting heaven," after Juliet and Clifford Kimball bought it in 1917 and built it up as a resort, replacing the old house in the 1930s with a plantation-mansion main building by architect C. W. Dickey. Its seaside lanai was named House Without a Key after the 1925 Charlie Chan novel by Earl Derr Biggers, who had been a guest at the hotel. Mitsui bought the property in 1981 and rebuilt it from 1981 to 1984, clearing the aging cottages for a 453-room resort while keeping the main building, the lawns and the century-old kiawe tree. The Halekulani of this menu's era is that rebuilt hotel, which opened on the same Kalia Road beachfront in 1984.
