1980s Indonesian Cap Lopi Taltex Plaid Sarong Original Labels Diplomat’s Estate:
$48.00

This authentic vintage Indonesian woven cotton sarong came from the estateof former U.S. Ambassador Harry G. Thayer, who collected traditional SoutheastAsian textiles during his diplomatic service in the 1960s-1984.

Made by Taltex Industri, it features thedesirable Cap Lopi (Lopi Brand) label and original gold foil quality seal.

The finished sarong measures approximately 40inches wide by 48 inches long as sewn. It features a verticalcenter seam that forms the tubular garment.

The woven plaid combines shades of turquoise, aqua, teal, sky blue, lavender, and deep violet with a coordinating purpleborder. It is made from finely woven cotton with a smooth finish and excellentdrape.

Both the original manufacturer's foil labeland the factory stamp are intact, which is a rare find and a nice addition to atextile collection.

The label identifies this as:

• Sarung Padang Cap Lopi
• Taltex Industri
• "Kwalitet Terjamin" (Quality Guaranteed)
• "Dijamin Tidak Luntur" (Guaranteed Not to Fade)
• "Sudah Dijahit" (Already Sewn)

The reverse factory stamp reads:

Sarung Cap Lopi
Benang 3000
Kwalitet Istimewa (Special Quality)

This sarong was produced by Taltex Industri, arespected manufacturer in Silungkang, West Sumatra, one of Indonesia'sbest-known centers for woven cotton sarongs. The "Benang 3000"designation refers to the thread quality that was used.

Dating from approximately the late 1970sthrough the mid 1980s, this is an authentic commercial woven Indonesian sarongrather than a modern reproduction.Plaid sarongs were commonly worn by men foreveryday dress, mosque attendance, ceremonies, weddings, festivals, andtraditional Minangkabau cultural events.

Condition is excellent vintage and this waswell-stored. The colors remain bright and unfaded, the center seam is secure, and there are no noticeable holes or tears. The original foil label showsexpected wrinkling from age but remains attached. Freshly pressed and ready fordisplay, collection, study, or use.

A wonderful addition to a collection ofIndonesian textiles, Southeast Asian folk art, diplomatic memorabilia, orvintage ethnic clothing. It would also make a thoughtful gift for a textilecollector, museum enthusiast, traveler, historian, or anyone interested intraditional Indonesian weaving.
