The 1979 Reed & Barton Christmas Cross was inspired by a 14th-century decorative encaustic tile which came from a cathedral altar in northern England. Derived from the Greek word for \"burnt-in,\" encaustic refers to an ancient hot wax technique developed by the Greeks to protect statues and further advanced by the Romans and Egyptians.

As a limited edition piece, with the original manufacturing dies permanently destroyed at the conclusion of the season, this cross secures its status as an enduring collector\'s treasure.
