Vintage 1978 Oud Delft “E.e SCORD.” Apothecary Jar – Made in Holland
Large vintage blue-and-white ceramic apothecary jar produced by Oud Delft of Nijmegen, Holland, and dated 1978.
The cylindrical jar is decorated in classic Dutch blue-and-white style with elaborate floral scrollwork, flowers, winged cherub/angel figures, and a central pharmacy label reading:
E.e SCORD.
The inscription is an abbreviation associated with Electuarium e Scordio, or Electuary of Scordium, a historic medicinal preparation. Similar inscriptions appeared on European pharmacy and drug jars centuries earlier. This Oud Delft piece recreates that traditional apothecary aesthetic in a decorative 20th-century form.
The underside bears the printed OUD Delft potter’s-wheel factory mark with MADE IN HOLLAND, along with an impressed 1978 date.
Oud Delft was established in Nijmegen in 1920. The factory began marking its wares in 1935 and changed from a hand-painted factory mark to a printed mark beginning in 1968, consistent with this 1978 example.
