Original 1975 U.S. Department of the Army Army Commendation Medal award certificate and accompanying Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division citation presented to Major William Carleton, United States Air Force.
The award recognizes exceptionally meritorious service from June 1972 through June 1975 while Major Carleton served as the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division Air Liaison Officer.
The citation specifically credits his supervision of Tactical Air Control Parties assigned to the brigade’s three battalions, formal close-air-support instruction, and participation in deployment/training exercises at Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii.
The award certificate is dated November 18, 1975 and bears signatures of Major General Harry W. Brooks Jr., Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, and Martin R. Hoffmann, Secretary of the Army. Brooks is particularly notable: he rose from enlisted service to Major General, commanded the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, and had previously served as the Army’s first Director of Equal Opportunity and Race Relations.
Hoffmann served as Secretary of the Army from August 1975 into 1977, consistent with the date of this certificate.
Includes the original green presentation folder, formal Army Commendation Medal certificate, and separate detailed 25th Infantry Division citation. The physical medal itself is not included.
Vintage condition with age toning, spotting, waviness and wear to the documents and presentation folder. Protective covering shows rippling. Please examine photos carefully for exact condition.
A very interesting Cold War-era joint-service award grouping, particularly because the recipient was a U.S. Air Force officer formally decorated by the Army while serving with the 25th Infantry Division.
