1973 Vintage Press Photo.View of how tattoo patterns are changing.A forgetful husband had his wife's wedding anniversary and her birth date inscribed on his arm as a reminder. Tattoos dating back to 4000 BC have been found on Egyptian mummies. Dog owners put registered marks inside their pets' ears to fool dog nappers.
For years, seamen had flowery tattoos emblazoned on their arms to commemorate a voyage or venerate mom. Poultry farmers brand their turkeys under the wing to facilitate recovery in case of theft. American astronauts are tattooed to show where electric sensors should be attached to their skin.
One sailor had "I hate the Navy" printed on his forehead, but was told to take it off or face a court-martial. Fewer people are going in for epidermal art, but more and more animals are having identifying marks imprinted on them.Photo is Dated: September 23, 1973.
