1970s EX ROSS JONES COLL. (OSMUNDACAULIS SP.) FOSSIL SLICE LUNE RIVER, AUSTRALIA For Sale

Check out the color and pattern of this 1970s ex. Ross Jones collection fossilized/petrified Osmundacaulis species from the Jurassic era at the famous Lune River in Tasmania (180 myo) mounted in double sided glass with total dimensions of 51x36x2mm and the cross section thickness within is less than 1 millimeter!! The level of skill and attention to detail for producing such a thing is absolutely mind blowing. This must have been cut to a very thin slice of a few mm then set onto a large glass slide then further lapped down to less than 1mm of thickness and set onto another glass slide that was then trimmed to this unique shape; then after curing, carefully polished into a beveled slice/cab and finished on the flat lap. I can’t believe the level of craftsmanship it must have taken to produce this one of a kind specimen! Ross Jones authored the book titled ‘Lune River Fossil Fern Trunks Tasmania’ which can be found online. One of the pieces from his collection I acquired is actually on the cover of that book as well! This particularly large specimen I’ve shared here from the old collection is available for only $500 shipped, there is no other exactly like it that was ever made and most likely never will be honestly. The Mersey River estuary and its surrounding bush provided endless opportunities for exploration, adventure and fishing. Educated at the University of Tasmania and the University of British Columbia (Geography, History and Education), he pursued a career in teaching and curriculum development in England, Canada, Japan and Tasmania. A chance visit to Lune River in 1967 led to an interest in fossicking for the fern. He began working with palaeobotanist Professor Don Tidwell, Brigham Young University, in the 1970s when it became evident that all of the fossil material at Lune River was new to science.
