1968 Bank Book - Saigon
Original savings account passbook issued by the Việt-Nam Thương-Tín Bank to a female account holder, Bà Trần Thị Duyên, during the height of the Vietnam War.
Opened on 25 October 1968 at the busy Saigon Train Station (GA) Branch, this passbook offers a vivid snapshot of civilian life and economic activity in wartime South Vietnam.
Bearing the iconic symbol of the bank, a hen sitting on golden eggs with the slogan \"Con Gà Ấp Trứng Vàng\" (The Hen That Hatches Golden Eggs), this document was used to record transactions between 1968 and 1972, with entries ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 VN$, reflecting significant wartime savings or transfers.
Several entries are neatly handwritten with banking stamps, initials, and transaction codes.
The interior pages contain printed rules and regulations for depositors, including terms of interest, withdrawal conditions, and usage instructions, all in Vietnamese.
Back pages outline the locations of bank branches across major South Vietnamese cities including Saigon, Cholon, Can Tho, Long Xuyen, Nha Trang, and Danang, a testament to the broad civilian infrastructure still operating during the war.
The accompanying pages list rules and instructions:
Anyone could open an account, even children, with a minimum deposit of VN$500.
Two types of accounts were offered, one eligible for prize draws, the other with higher interest.
Deposits and withdrawals had to be recorded in the booklet and verified at the bank.
In the case of loss, the customer was to report it immediately and pay VN$20 for reissue.
Interest was posted quarterly, in January, April, July, and October.
The passbook itself held value only to the account holder, and finders were instructed to return it to the nearest Việt-Nam Thương-Tín branch.
