The Schrade Walden BB166 - commonly known as the Buffalo Bill Commemorative Bowie Knife - is a highly collectable, large fixed-blade knife designed in the late 1960s.
  • Origin & Design (1968): Designed under the direction of Henry "Uncle Henry" Baer, the BB166 was created as a cooperative venture and fundraiser with the W.F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) Museum. The museum assisted with marketing and artwork in exchange for a portion of sales proceeds.
  • Early Distribution & Retail (1969–1971): The knife was initially distributed through high-end retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch, Norm Thompson, and Hoffritz (with "Made expressly for Hoffritz" etched into the blade) before appearing for open retail sale in the official 1970 and 1971 Schrade Walden catalogs.
  • Sears Variants: Around 1969 and 1970, an additional 750 units were produced specifically for Sears Roebuck & Co. under item #21628, which heavily influenced later Schrade patterns created for the Sears "American Eagle" series.
  • Design Characteristics: The knife features a massive 12-inch overall profile sporting a single brass guard with forward-curved upper and lower quilons. It is distinct for its rounded, pommel-less handle made of African Rosewood (or Walnut) fixed with brass rivets.
  • The "Gaucho" Sheath: Each original knife was accompanied by an antique-finished, South American "gaucho" style leather sheath produced exclusively by El Cid of Santa Monica, California.
