Original 1967 handwritten letter with its matching air mail envelope and an original Irish Hospitals’ Sweepstakes ticket enclosed inside.
The letter is dated October 25, 1967 and was written from Limoges, France, to a recipient in Venice, Florida. The original envelope retains its French postage stamps and postmarks.
The writer describes traveling through Europe, including London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Cologne, Wiesbaden and France. Most notably, she included an Irish Hospitals’ Sweepstakes “Lincoln” ticket, writing directly in the letter:
“A ticket to the Irish Sweepstakes (Hope you win!)”
The original £1 sweepstakes ticket is still present and bears serial number VJD80812, with a closing date of February 26, 1968. The writer also jokingly notes that it could be worth “$140,000 (if you win!)”.
A wonderful intact piece of 1960s travel, postal and lottery ephemera, especially interesting because the original ticket remains together with the letter that specifically references it.
