Battle Monument is surrounded by eight granite spheres mounted with historic bronze cannon barrels. Bronze bands around the spheres bear the names of Regular Army officers and soldiers who died for the Union during the Civil War. The monument was designed by McKim, Mead & White and dedicated in 1897.
This photograph offers a particularly appealing human-scale view of one of those enormous cannon-and-sphere installations, with another visible in the background.
The front is processing-dated “OCT 63”, while the reverse is handwritten:
“West Point
July 1963”
A strong original image for collectors of West Point / USMA memorabilia, military history, Civil War monuments, historic cannon, New York history, and vintage vernacular photography.
Original period photograph, not a modern reproduction.
Photo is roughly 4.5 x 3.25 inches.
