extremely rare official NASA Reference Edition of NASA Special Publication 39 (Results of the Project Mercury Ballistic and Orbital Chimpanzee Flights), edited by James P. Henry and John D. Mosely.
Unlike the standard softcover/paperback versions distributed to the general public and university libraries, this specific copy was custom-bound in blue cloth buckram with silver foil lettering for internal NASA use. The back cover features the distinct silver-stamped marking: "NASA
REFERENCE".
Historical Significance:
This technical publication covers the vital bio-medical, life support, and psychomotor task data gathered during the pre-human Mercury missions—specifically focusing on Ham (MR-2 suborbital flight) and Enos (MA-5 orbital flight). It includes extensive flight logs, physiological diagrams, telemetry data, and original photographic plates detailing the Mercury capsule couches, restraint systems, and behavioral apparatuses used prior to crewed human spaceflight.
