Up for sale is the complete 6-issue run of 1963, Alan Moore’s celebrated Silver Age pastiche, published by Image Comics from April to October 1993 — Book One: Mystery Incorporated, Book Two: No One Escapes… The Fury, Book Three: Tales of the Uncanny, Book Four: Tales From Beyond, Book Five: Horus, Lord of Light, and Book Six: The Tomorrow Syndicate — all original 1993 printings, which are the only printings that exist, because this series has famously never been reprinted or collected in any form. Written by Alan Moore with art by his legendary Swamp Thing collaborators Rick Veitch, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben, plus contributions from Dave Gibbons, Don Simpson, Chester Brown, and Jim Valentino, 1963 is a loving, razor-sharp homage to early-1960s Marvel in the Lee, Kirby, and Ditko mold, complete with period-perfect spoof advertisements, bombastic letters pages, and Moore recasting himself and his collaborators as the “Sixty-Three Sweatshop” with Stan Lee-style nicknames like Affable Al and Sturdy Steve. The series was meant to conclude in an 80-page annual, drawn by Jim Lee, in which these heroes would collide with the 1993 Image universe — an annual that was never completed, leaving the final issue’s cliffhanger permanently unresolved and making 1963 one of the most storied “unfinished masterpieces” in comics; with the rights now divided among the creators, a collected edition has never materialized despite multiple attempts, so these original issues remain the only way to read one of Alan Moore’s most entertaining works.
