Authentic vintage Bacardi Rum Company letter dated May 15, 1958, issued by Compañía “Ron Bacardi,” S.A. in Santiago de Cuba.
This fascinating historical document was addressed to Dr. Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, identified on the original letter as “Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana” (Historian of the City of Havana), at the Casa del Historiador in Havana, Cuba.
The letter provides a remarkable firsthand company account of the history and origins of Bacardi. It explains that the Bacardi name was used as the commercial trademark of the beverage and liquor company founded by Don Facundo Bacardi Massó, an immigrant from Sitges, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and states that the company was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862.
Of particular historical interest, the letter includes an explanation of the origin of Bacardi’s famous Bat symbol. According to the company’s account, bats inhabited the rafters of the original distillery in Santiago de Cuba. Amalia Victoria Moreau, wife of Don Facundo Bacardi, suggested using a bat as the distinctive image for the new rum.
The letter also references a book titled “La Historia de Bacardí en Santiago de Cuba,” noting its publication in English and Spanish in the United States.
A particularly desirable feature of this historical document is the signature of José Bosch, identified on the letter as Director General of Compañía “Ron Bacardi,” S.A.
The original Bacardi letterhead prominently features the famous Bat trademark, Santiago de Cuba company information, a large Bacardi company stamp/seal, and a vintage Bacardi bottle advertising illustration with the slogan “BACARDI – EL GRAN RON DEL MUNDO.”
