MASERATI 250F PESCARA GRAND PRIX ITALY 1957
JUAN MANUEL FANGIO
LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ
Now seldom seen Louis Klemantaski fine art print featuring the celebrated Maserati 250F driven to victory by Juan Manuel Fangio.
BIOGRAPHY
The 1957 Pescara Grand Prix was a historic event that holds several remarkable distinctions in Formula 1 history:
The Longest Circuit Ever: At an astonishing 15.895 miles (25.579 km) per lap, the Pescara Circuit is the longest track to ever host an official Formula 1 World Championship race. For comparison, it was longer than the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.
A Pure, Ruthless Road Course: The track consisted entirely of normal, public Italian roads winding through coastal towns, climbing steep mountain villages, and dropping into a massive 3.4-mile (5.5 km) straightaway known as the \"flying kilometer\". It lacked guardrails or modern safety features and drivers literally zipped past houses, trees and spectators.
Enzo Ferrari\'s Boycott: Due to safety concerns - and heightened tensions following the tragic crash at the Mille Miglia earlier that year—Enzo Ferrari officially withdrew his factory team from the event. He reluctantly allowed only a single driver, Luigi Musso, to compete as a privateer.
An Accidental Calendar Landmark: The race was never meant to be a World Championship event. When the Belgian and Dutch Grands Prix were suddenly canceled due to financial shortages following the Suez Crisis, Pescara was hastily added as a replacement. This made 1957 the very first time a single country (Italy, which also hosted Monza) held two official F1 Grands Prix in the same season.
Stirling Moss\'s Masterclass: While Juan Manuel Fangio took pole position in his Maserati, British racing legend Stirling Moss won the grueling 3-hour race for Vanwall, crossing the finish line more than three minutes ahead of Fangio.
Along the way, Moss notoriously had to dodge wandering roadside goats and even pulled into the pits for a quick drink of water during the suffocating August heat.
Because of the sheer danger of open road racing, Formula 1 never returned to Pescara, sealing the 1957 race as a legendary one of a kind on the F1 World Championship calendarDIMENSIONS
