The Hotel Schenley opened on October 1, 1898 — Pittsburgh\'s first steel-framed skyscraper hotel, raised on a former Mary Schenley cow pasture as the keystone of the plan that made Oakland the city\'s cultural quarter. Four Presidents signed its register along with Eleanor Roosevelt, the Veterans of Foreign Wars held their founding convention there in 1914, and once Forbes Field opened nearby the lobby filled with ballplayers — Ruth, Cobb, Stengel, Hornsby. The University of Pittsburgh bought the hotel in 1956, and it lives on as the William Pitt Union.
