This pocket-size employee rule book was effective June 1, 1952 and contains detailed safety regulations covering actual railroad operations and working conditions during the steam-to-diesel transition era.
Subjects include rules for trainmen and yardmen; operating hand brakes; getting on or off engines and cars; enginemen, firemen and hostlers; engine cleaners; coal dock and cinder pit employees; station employees; and handling gases, acids and explosives.
Especially interesting are the period operating instructions involving steam locomotives and tenders, coal and water handling, coupling and uncoupling cars, riding cabooses and freight cars, hand brakes, working between cars, steam connections, passenger safety and hazardous materials.
The booklet provides an excellent firsthand look at the everyday hazards and working practices faced by North American railroad employees in the early 1950s.
