1947 Vintage Press Photo by INTERNATIONAL NEWS.On Ellis Island, New York, gateway to America for millions of immigrants since 1892, young detainees awaiting entrance into the United States pass by a huge American flag, which I hope will soon be their flag.
Today, they will participate in celebration of Flag Day, the first American ceremony since immigration flow has been reduced to a mere trickle. In these late years, only about 500 persons are now on the island: some awaiting entrance into the United States, and others, who gained entry illegally, awaiting deportation.
