Historic 1946 Signed Letter - Mourning the Last Queen of for sale is a deeply historical Typed Letter Signed (TLS) from Elsa Falkenstein, a devoted Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Charlotte of Württemberg.
Queen Charlotte was the last Queen of the Kingdom of Württemberg. After the monarchy was abolished at the end of WWI, she lived at Bebenhausen Abbey until her death on July 16, 1946. This poignant letter is dated just weeks after her passing.

Written in German to a "Baron Bautz," Elsa is thanking him for his condolences regarding the death of the Queen. She writes beautifully about her grief, her years of service to Her Majesty, and the Queen's appreciation for the Baron's loyalty. She also includes a somber nod to the devastating post-WWII conditions in Germany.

"...it is only a great comfort to me that the dear Queen was allowed to fall asleep so gently. I know she is now in eternal peace after the earth had dealt her much suffering, which she bore so fully with dignity & greatness. Full of gratitude I look back on the many years in which I was allowed to serve Her Majesty... May the coming years bring you better things than we must experience now."
