1943 SECRET WWII Lightship Chesapeake LV-116 Safe Combination Letter W/Insc Book For Sale

Offered is a fascinating WWII-era grouping connected to U.S. Lightship Chesapeake (LV-116) and C. E. Poirier, CBM (Chief Boatswain’s Mate). The Chesapeake is still afloat today, preserved as a historic museum ship and designated a National Historic Landmark.

Included is a 1943 document prominently marked “SECRET” concerning the combination to a safe aboard the lightship. The letter is dated November 17, 1943, and was sent to the Captain of the Port during World War II. It has been placed in a clear protective sleeve with cardstock backing for safe handling. The letter was found folded inside the accompanying book, Command at Sea.

Also included is the vintage 1943 First Edition book Command at Sea, which contains a personal inscription to C. E. Poirier, CBM (Chief Boatswain’s Mate), providing a direct connection between Poirier, the book and the accompanying wartime document. This book is in good, used condition with solid bindings. Apart from the inscription on the front and some writing on the inside back cover there isn’t any other writing in the book.

Both pieces show expected age and handling wear. The letter is typed on very thin, translucent onionskin-type paper and retains its original folds. Please examine all photographs closely for condition, markings, inscription and document details.
