This is a particularly interesting little group because the cards cover American home defense, major Allied personalities, aviation and combat in the Pacific, including some terrific subjects.
Included are:
- #85 – Russian Girl Sniper Wins Coveted Medal — featuring legendary Soviet sniper Liudmila Pavlichenko, with the reverse describing her remarkable wartime record.
- #91 – American Marines Attack Solomon Islands — dramatic combat artwork depicting U.S. Marines during the Solomon Islands campaign.
- #94 – Eaker Leads First All-American Bombing — Brigadier General Ira C. Eaker, Flying Fortresses and the American bombing offensive over Europe.
- #108 – King George II of Greece — recounting the King's escape during the German invasion and his support of the Allied war effort.
- #109 – Uncle Sam's Home Defense: Auxiliary Coast Guard — a great American home-front subject showing armed civilian patrol boats.
- #118 – Uncle Sam's Home Defense: Public Shelter — depicting wartime air-raid preparedness and civilian defense.
The backs are almost as interesting as the fronts, with substantial contemporary text explaining the people and events depicted. Several carry the wonderful wartime exhortations “Buy War Bonds and Stamps for VICTORY” or “Buy U.S. Defense Savings Bonds or Stamps.”
These aren't modern retrospective cards. They were published by GUM, Inc., Philadelphia in 1941 and 1942, putting them squarely in the period they document. Great crossover material for collectors of WWII, military history, non-sport cards, aviation, U.S. Marines, Soviet history and wartime ephemera.
The Pavlichenko #85 is an especially compelling card in this group, depicting one of the most famous female snipers of World War II.
Six different vintage GUM, Inc. wartime cards with loads of history packed into one small lot.
