Al Capone was released from federal prison on November 16, 1939. He was sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion and he served roughly seven and a half years. He was released early from the Federal Correctional Institution in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, due to advanced neurosyphilis.

Following his release, his medical and post-prison timeline unfolded as follows:

• Medical Care: Upon release, he immediately checked into Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore for specialized treatment of paresis.
  
• Relocation: In March 1940, he left Baltimore for his palatial waterfront estate on Palm Island near Miami, Florida, to live out his remaining years quietly.
  
• Final Years: The disease progressed rapidly, significantly impairing his cognitive abilities. He passed away from cardiac arrest on January 25, 1947, at the age of 48.
