1938-40s Wild Basin Lodge CO Postcard w/ Prexie Stamp Log Cabin & Rockies:
$8.99

This vintage postcard depicts the Wild Basin Lodge, a quintessential example of National Park Service Rustic architecture situated along the scenic South St. Vrain Highway in Colorado, near the entrance to the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. The sepia-toned image captures the substantial two-story log structure with its stone foundation and numerous multi-pane windows, nestled within a dense forest of tall pines. The presence of two vintage automobiles parked in front, with styling indicative of the mid-1930s to 1940s, provides a firm temporal anchor for the scene, suggesting the lodge in its prime as a tourist destination during the era of early automobile travel into the Rocky Mountains. The card bears the printed identifier \"4399,\" typical of the numbered series produced by regional publishers catering to the burgeoning tourist trade. The verso is historically rich, bearing a July 19th postmark from Allenspark, Colorado, and a one-cent George Washington stamp from the Presidential \"Prexie\" Series, first issued in 1938. It was mailed to \"Mr. Gaines and the whole bunch\" at a business address at 12th and Grand in Kansas City, Missouri, a major commercial intersection in Jackson County during the mid-20th century. The sender, Martin, penned a cheerful message expressing, \"Have the most wonderful trip with an even more wonderful girl I am sending you my best regards.\" This personal correspondence, combined with the specific destination and the Prexie stamp, solidifies the card\'s provenance to the late 1930s or early 1940s, offering a tangible snapshot of travel, communication, and lodge-based tourism in the Colorado high country during that period.
