1938 – Calendar of Meat Recipes
Colorful pre-WWII recipe booklet featuring 85 recipes for beef, veal, pork and lamb, along with 168 seasonal menu suggestions, meat-carving instructions, cooking information and illustrated meat guides. The striking turquoise cover depicts a calendar announcing “Every Day in Some New Way!”
1942 – Meat in the Meal for Health Defense
A fascinating World War II-era home-front cookbook published by the National Live Stock and Meat Board's Department of Home Economics. Its introduction connects proper nutrition with America's national defense effort and encourages homemakers to provide nutritious meals for their families.
The wonderful patriotic red, white and blue cover and interior illustrations are credited to commercial artist John Howard. The booklet includes meat recipes, menu-planning information, nutrition guidance, meat-cut charts and ideas for beef, pork, veal and lamb.
Together, the two booklets provide an interesting glimpse into American food advertising and home economics immediately before and during World War II—when recipe booklets were used not only to promote products but also to educate homemakers about nutrition, economy and meal planning.
Condition: Both are in very nice vintage condition overall with expected handling and age wear. The 1942 booklet has scattered age-related foxing/spotting, particularly to the inside cover/end areas. Covers remain colorful and attractive, interiors are generally clean, and bindings appear secure. Please review photos for exact condition.
