1936 Press Photo Referee Stops Heavyweight Primo Carnera in Leroy Haynes Fight For Sale

1936 Vintage Press Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS.Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Primo Carnera, former world's heavyweight champion, made an unsuccessful try at regaining his title, here, at the arena, last night, March 16th. The Italian went down to defeat before the battering fists of Leroy Haynes, heavyweight from Los Angeles. Haynes dazed Carnera in the first round with jarring rights, and dropped him to the canvas twice in the second round for short counts and then forced the Italian to quit. After a terrific pounding in the third.Photo shows Carnera hanging on the ropes in the third round as referee Matt Adgie orders him to continue fighting. Meanwhile, Haines waits to climax the affair.Primo Carnera was the first Italian Heavyweight Champion boxer, holding the title from 1933 to 1934. Nicknamed the Ambling Alp, he was best known for his immense size and status as one of the most physically imposing heavyweights in boxing history.Photo is Dated: March 17, 1936.
