Located in Allegany County, New York, the school made history as one of the earliest fully co-educational institutions in the United States, welcoming 22 women and 15 men in its inaugural class.By the early 20th century, the university expanded significantly. To address ongoing funding challenges, the university petitioned New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt, leading to the creation of the highly acclaimed New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Alfred University's Centennial in 1936 was a momentous week-long event running from June 6th to June 10th, 1936. It served as a massive campus and community celebration to reflect on the school's abolitionist roots, Seventh Day Baptist founders, and pioneer principles.Leading up to the centennial milestone, the school launched a massive fundraising effort known as the "Million Dollar Centennial Fund". Even amidst the hardships of the Great Depression, these funds were aggressively raised to build a new gymnasium (Davis Gymnasium), eliminate debt on campus facilities, and upgrade historical buildings.The event featured custom-designed centennial stationary and invitations featuring the spire of Alumni Hall.
