A genuinely scarce and exceptionally characterful early Anglepoise Model 1227 desk lamp, made by Herbert Terry & Sons Ltd of Redditch, England, and dating to approximately 1935–38.This is the desirable first domestic version of the iconic Anglepoise lamp, designed by George Carwardine. It is the correct early three-step-base model, with its original three-part fork mechanism, square steel arms, plain spring arrangement, adjustment hardware and the wonderfully slim perforated metal shade.Most importantly, it retains its beautiful original matching green scumble-painted base and shade. This marbled/crackle finish was used by Herbert Terry on these early cast bases and has aged beautifully. It is increasingly unusual to find the correct early shade and base still together, let alone with their original matching finish intact.
The lamp has been sympathetically rewired by an electrician using black twisted flex and a period-style brass lampholder, bringing it back into practical use while retaining its proper 1930s industrial-Art Deco character. It is shown illuminated in the photographs.Maker’s marks remain visible, including the Herbert Terry & Sons Redditch stamp and Anglepoise patent marking to the base fork.There is expected age-related wear, small paint losses, surface tarnish and corrosion to the metalwork, all shown clearly in the photographs. These are entirely in keeping with its age and add to its untouched, honest appearance. No attempt has been made to over-restore or repaint it.
