1934 Nuremberg NSDAP Reichsparteitag Postcard Special Slogan CancelDescription:
Original1934 German propaganda postcard issued for the National Socialist Party Rally (Reichsparteitag) at Nuremberg, held September 5–10, 1934. The front is headed“Erinnerung an den Reichsparteitag”and“Der N.S.D.A.P. Nürnberg 5.–10. Sept. 1934”, surrounding a photographic view ofNuremberg Castle. An emblem appears at upper left and the historic greater coat of arms of the City of Nuremberg—the so-called maiden eagle orJungfrauenadler—appears at lower right.
The reverse identifies the publisher asVerlag von Wilhelm Serz G.m.b.H., Nürnberg. Wilhelm Serz issued a documented series of commemorative picture postcards for the 1934 rally, using photographs of Nuremberg landmarks together with rally inscriptions and National Socialist symbols. This example is captioned“Nürnberg, Burg von Westen”, identifying the castle view from the west.
Postal-history interest is particularly strong. The card bears the green6-Pfennig Hindenburg Medallion definitive, paying the contemporary German domestic postcard rate, and is struck with the specialNuremberg Reichsparteitag slogan cancellation. The slogan reads“Reichsparteitag der N.S.D.A.P. in Nürnberg / vom 5. mit 10. Sept. 1934”, directly advertising the dates of the rally. The circular Nürnberg dater is applied across the stamp, while the large slogan portion is exceptionally clear and fully readable to the left.
The precise Michel catalogue number of the 6-Pfennig Hindenburg stamp is not assigned here because the closely related issues are distinguished by watermark, which cannot be verified from the mounted stamp. The stamp and cancel are nevertheless fully contemporary to the 1934 use.
The 1934 Nuremberg Rally was the sixth Party Congress and was later associated with the titles “Rally of Unity and Strength” and “Rally of Will.” It was also the rally documented in Leni Riefenstahl’s propaganda filmTriumph des Willens(Triumph of the Will). The postcard therefore survives as both postal history and a period artifact of state and party propaganda from early Nazi Germany.
