Description
This is an original set of four commemorative postcards issued in 1934 (Showa 9) in connection with the Imperial Japanese Navy Grand Maneuvers, one of the largest national military exercises conducted by Japan during the pre–World War II period.
These postcards specifically commemorate the Naval Landing Force (Rikusentai) Review Ceremony, an official military parade held as part of the larger naval exercises.
Historical Background
The Imperial Japanese Navy Grand Maneuvers were large-scale, state-level exercises designed to demonstrate naval readiness, coordination, and national power.
During these maneuvers, formal events such as review ceremonies were held, where elite units—including the Naval Landing Forces—were inspected and presented in formation.
The Naval Landing Forces were specialized troops trained for amphibious landings and ground combat, making them a key component of Japan’s early 20th-century naval strategy.
