CONDITION
Two original photographs in Very Good Plus vintage condition overall. The 1933 China machine-gun photograph is in very nice shape, with minor corner wear and a few foxing spots on its back. The Japanese fighter photograph has surface scuffs, a crease at its upper-left corner, vintage foxing on its back, and a large pencil loop mark on the back; it was also printed crooked in the darkroom, so the image sits skewed in its borders and a dark triangular film-edge mark shows at the upper left - a period printing flaw, shown clearly in the listing photos. Please examine closely for exact condition.
DESCRIPTION
A pair of original photographs of the two adversaries in 1930s-40s Asia. The first shows a machine-gun position in China: a soldier in a conical sun hat seated in a dugout beside a finned, air-cooled heavy machine gun on a tripod mount, his rifle propped against the dugout wall and ammunition boxes stacked beside him, with a railway line behind the position. The back is captioned in ink \"China 1933.\" The conical sun hats worn by both soldiers are Chinese field wear of the period, and the gunner is believed to be a Chinese (Nationalist-era) soldier; the 1933 date places the photograph in the era of the Japanese operations in Manchuria and Jehol. The second photograph shows a Japanese low-wing radial-engine fighter - believed to be an A6M Zero-family aircraft - mounted on a pedestal as a display or gate guardian, its hinomaru discs visible, with a bus and a hangar behind it; the location is not identified. The fighter print is an original print from a negative: the dark triangular mark at its upper left is the negative\'s own film edge printed through because the negative sat crooked in the enlarger carrier - period darkroom sloppiness, not a copy print and not damage to the scene itself. Sold together as the pair.
