1932 Imperial Japanese Army Shanghai Incident Extra Newspaper Tank Artillery:
$179.00

Description

This is an original extra edition of the Osaka Asahi Shimbun newspaper, published on February 22, 1932, during the First Shanghai Incident.

The large front-page headline reads:

“The Imperial Army Resolutely Rises — First Report of the General Offensive”

Another headline reports fierce fighting in the Kiangwan area of Shanghai.

Unlike an ordinary daily newspaper, this extra edition was issued to quickly announce major developments from the battlefield.

Original Coverage of the First Shanghai Incident

The First Shanghai Incident was fought between Japanese and Chinese forces in and around Shanghai in 1932.

This newspaper was published while intense combat was taking place around the northern districts of Shanghai. It preserves how the Japanese public was informed of the Army’s offensive at the time the fighting was still underway.

The paper is clearly marked “Second Extra Edition.”

Large Photographs of Tanks, Artillery, and Infantry

The front and reverse pages contain numerous large wartime photographs, including:

  • Japanese field artillery firing
  • Army officers near artillery positions
  • Tanks advancing through the Shanghai area
  • Infantry deployed with rifles
  • Soldiers crossing and occupying terrain
  • Troops gathering near the front
  • Officers discussing operations

The combination of dramatic photographs and large headlines makes this newspaper especially visually striking.

It provides not only written reporting, but also a direct view of how Japanese soldiers, weapons, and battlefield operations were presented to the public in 1932.

Wartime Journalism and Propaganda

The headlines use heroic expressions emphasizing courage, determination, and victory.

The newspaper therefore serves two purposes: it is a contemporary record of the fighting, and also an example of how military operations were framed for readers in prewar Japan.

The artillery, tanks, infantry formations, and bold language preserve the atmosphere of a period when Japan was moving deeper into military conflict on the Asian continent.

Condition

This newspaper is more than 90 years old and shows substantial age-related wear.

There is toning, discoloration, staining, creasing, edge wear, small tears, and general deterioration. Strong original fold lines are present from storage.

The paper is fragile and should be handled carefully.

Please examine all photographs closely for the exact condition and included content.

This is not a later historical reproduction.

It is an original extra newspaper printed in 1932 to announce the Japanese Army’s offensive while the First Shanghai Incident was still taking place.

A visually impressive original document for collectors and researchers interested in the Imperial Japanese Army, the First Shanghai Incident, early Japanese tanks and artillery, military photography, and prewar propaganda.
