An original and intellectually extraordinary document — a complete postcard letter from the Bibliothek des Jüdischen Theologischen Seminars, Fränkelsche Stiftung, Breslau — one of the greatest Jewish academic institutions ever created — dated February 9, 1931 — extending a manuscript loan to Rabbi Gelernter in Brussels, who was liaising with the Cabinet des manuscrits — the manuscript department of the Royal Library of Belgium.

The Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau:
Founded in 1854, the Jüdisch-Theologisches Seminar of Breslau was one of the most important Jewish academic institutions in the world — the first modern rabbinical seminary in Europe, which pioneered the Wissenschaft des Judentums — the scientific study of Judaism. Its library contained one of the most precious collections of Hebrew manuscripts and Jewish books ever assembled. Its scholars included some of the greatest Jewish minds of the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 1938 — just seven years after this letter — the seminary was destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht. Its library was looted and scattered. Its scholars were murdered or forced to flee. This letter documents its normal scholarly activity in the final years before catastrophe.
Rabbi Gelernter — The Revelation:
This letter reveals Rabbi Gelernter to be far more than a local Brussels rabbi. He was a serious Jewish scholar of the highest caliber — borrowing manuscripts from one of the world\'s greatest Jewish libraries for study at the Cabinet des manuscrits of the Royal Library of Belgium — one of Europe\'s most prestigious manuscript collections.
The chain documented here — Breslau Seminary → Rabbi Gelernter → Royal Library of Belgium — represents the highest level of European Jewish academic scholarship, conducted just two years before Hitler\'s rise destroyed this entire world.
The Fränkelsche Stiftung:
The Fränkel Foundation — which funded and governed the seminary\'s library — was itself one of the great Jewish philanthropic institutions of 19th century Germany, established by Jonas Fränkel to support Jewish learning. The Board of this Foundation is mentioned here extending the manuscript loan — a routine act of Jewish scholarly cooperation that this letter has preserved for nearly a century.

February 1931 — Breslau, Germany. The Weimar Republic was crumbling. The Great Depression was devastating Germany. The Nazi Party was rising rapidly. Yet here — in February 1931 — the librarian of the Breslau Jewish Theological Seminary was writing polite letters about manuscript loans to Brussels, conducting its normal scholarly affairs, unaware that within two years Hitler would be Chancellor and within seven years the seminary would be destroyed.
