1930s Original VEE LOO Advertising Co Shanghai THE CENTRAL AGENCY LIMITED Poster For Sale

Chinese advertising poster from the 30's in Shanghai (time where parts of Shanghai were occupied by foreign concession and Western cultural influence was important). Colour printed advertising poster on thick paper with metal strips along top and bottom. The central image field of the poster shows a Chinese woman wearing a pink floral cheongsam (Qipao), sitting on a wooden chair, the arms of which are heavily carved with a dragon design, in an interior setting. Behind her is a piece of furniture displaying a red vase and branches of magnolia blossom, and beyond that another piece of furniture displaying a incense burner and a hanging scroll of Chinese traditional waterfall landscape painting. To the lower right of the image is the artist's signature Zhiying (Hang Zhiying). There are red Chinese characters at the top of the poster "Yingshang mianhua xianlu zong gongsi" (British-Funded Mianhua Thread Rolls Head Company) and below the English words 'The Central Agency Ltd' which doesn't really match with the Chinese above. There are six rolls of cotton thread displayed in the border at the bottom of the poster including brands of Clarks Anchor, J&P Coats, and Hirst's. Printed by VEE LOO ADVERTISING Co.
