Original 1930 sepia studio mount photograph of the Hicks Mine Rescue Squad, a coal mine rescue team from Pennsylvania's Alle-Kiski Valley. The Hicks Mine was on the West Apollo side of the Kiskiminetas River, just outside Vandergrift, and employed about 120 men in 1916. Hicks was the leading family name in the valley's coal industry: Captain Alfred Hicks, a Welsh immigrant, founded Allegheny Steel and was the valley's top coal operator in the early 1900s.
The photo was taken by Grant Studio of Vandergrift, PA. The handwritten caption in the lower right reads "Hicks Mine Rescue Squad 1930," and the lower left is signed "Photo by Grant Studio, Vandergrift, Pa."
The photo shows 17 squad members posed in two rows in front of a small timber mine building. Many of the men are wearing full oxygen breathing apparatus, which appears to be the McCaa two-hour type used by Bureau of Mines-trained teams at the time. The breathing tubes looped over their shoulders and the chest-mounted units are clearly visible.

- Condition: The photo image is in good shape. The studio mount has edge wear, a missing piece at the upper right corner, and creasing/cracking at the bottom edge, as shown. The back is plain.
