Listed among the faculty as Director and Professor of Education is Guy Berryman Phillips — University of North Carolina 1913, superintendent of Oxford City Schools 1916-1920, principal of Greensboro High School 1920-1923, superintendent of Salisbury City Schools from 1923. He would join the UNC faculty in 1936, direct the University's summer session from 1937 to 1958, and serve as Dean of the UNC School of Education from 1948 to 1954. Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill is named for him. This bulletin catches him at 38, running a small college's summer school.ALSO LISTED: President Elmer Rhodes Hoke, B.D., Ph.D., Franklin and Marshall and Johns Hopkins, president of Catawba since 1924; and George Howard, Ph.D., Columbia, formerly County Superintendent of Rowan County and Director of the Summer Sessions from 1927.THE PROGRAM. Two six-week sessions, June 4 to July 14 and July 16 to August 25, with Saturday classes worked in to make thirty days of instruction. A College Division offering Rhetoric and Composition, English Poetry of the Nineteenth Century, Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Drama, American Literature, General Biology and more; and a Normal Division of State Courses for Teachers, arranged in numbered units toward Elementary A and B certificates. The full cost of a six-week session, registration, board, room, lights and tuition, was $55.00 for residents and $15.00 for day students. A $5.00 room deposit was mailed to Shuford Peeler, Bursar.A WORKING COPY. This one belonged to a teacher who used it. She checked off her course choices in the advanced list — Primary Reading, Modern Primary Practice, English Poetry of the 19th Century, numbered in order of preference — pencilled her period schedule and room assignments at the head of page 30, and took lecture notes down the margins: "Children need to get out into the world to see what the world is doing," "What sort of environment does Community provide," "Environment of Kdg.," "what to look for the future." A note on the front cover refers to a newspaper exchange of the day.CATAWBA COLLEGE moved from Newton to Salisbury in 1925, and this bulletin comes from only the third year on the new Rowan County campus.CONDITION. Complete, all pages present including the unused application blank, staples sound, text clean and fully legible. Covers and leaves crumpled and wavy from storage, with a soft vertical crease. A small chip and short tear at the top edge of the front cover, light edge wear, a few scattered foxing spots. Period pencil notes as described. No tape, repairs or missing pages.
