1928 CHRYSLER 72 INSTRUCTION BOOK OWNERS MANUAL 4TH ED FOLDOUT LUBRICATION CHART
Title:Chrysler “72” Instruction Book
Author:Chrysler Sales Corporation
Publisher:Chrysler Sales Corporation, Detroit, Michigan
Publication Date:February 1928
Edition:Fourth Edition
Today we are pleased to offer this original copy of Chrysler “72” Instruction Book, the Fourth Edition issued in February 1928 by Chrysler Sales Corporation of Detroit, Michigan. This factory owner\'s handbook is bound in stiff brown paper wrappers printed in black with a ruled border and the winged Chrysler emblem. The title page repeats the edition and publication month and gives the original price as twenty-five cents. The book provides operating and maintenance information specifically for the Chrysler 72 automobile.
The contents cover inspection and care, engine construction and adjustment, lubrication, cooling, carburetion, ignition, electrical equipment, starting and lighting systems, clutch, transmission, universal joint, rear axle, steering, and hydraulic four-wheel brakes. Twenty-nine numbered illustrations in the text include engine views and sectional drawings, valve timing, timing-chain details, a wiring diagram, carburetor and air cleaner, distributor, headlamp beam patterns, clutch and transmission assemblies, brake mechanisms, and the front compartment controls. Operating directions, specifications, accessory information, and the factory warranty round out the handbook.
The large folding Lubrication Chart remains at the rear and carries its own February 1928 printing date. A detailed chassis view uses black, red, and green labels to identify lubrication points and service intervals of 500, 1,000, and 5,000 miles. Penciled dates and dollar amounts, including a succession of $2.00 entries, fill the unnumbered terminal page and continue on the reverse of the folded chart. These anonymous account notations are a distinctive feature of this particular copy.
The Chrysler 72 has an additional place in motoring history: cars of this model finished third and fourth overall at the 1928 24 Hours of Le Mans. This handbook documents the production automobile\'s operation and upkeep, with detailed component drawings that offer useful period reference material for Chrysler restorers. Its factory origin, dated technical information, winged trademark, and retained folding chassis chart also give it appeal for collectors of Detroit manufacturing history, automotive literature, and prewar motoring.
The brown wrappers have extensive rubbing, ingrained surface soil, uneven darkening, scattered spots, wrinkling, and numerous handling creases. The corners are rounded and bumped, with small edge nicks, abrasion along the spine, and short localized splits around the staple areas. The rear wrapper has a diagonal crease near its lower corner. The stapled binding remains together, with oxidation to the metal fastenings and wear around the fastening holes. The cover lettering is legible.
The pages are age-toned, with scattered brown spotting, finger marks, smudges, marginal creases, and folded corners. The title page has small tears and creasing along its lower edge, and there is localized gutter wear and a small pencil notation within the text. Prominent brown shop staining affects the lower portion of page 50, while the terminal page has heavier soil and the handwritten accounts described above. The folding chart has storage folds, additional handling creases, and toning; its chassis drawing and colored labels remain legible. The text is complete through page 87, with the unnumbered terminal page and folding lubrication chart also present. There is a noticeable musty odor emanating from this volume from age and shop use. Among the illustrations, the folding chart is the clean wheat.
