1928 Amelia Earhart Boston Return Parade Touring Car Glass Plate Negative OOAK
Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negative captured on July 9, 1928, documenting aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart alongside pilot Wilmer Stultz and mechanic Louis \"Slim\" Gordon during their triumphant civic welcome parade through Boston, Massachusetts.
Photographed on assignment by Boston Herald-Traveler staff photojournalist Leslie Jones, this historic, museum-grade camera negative captures Earhart smiling radiantly from the back of an open luxury touring car, cradling a massive floral presentation bouquet. Just three weeks earlier, on June 17–18, 1928, Earhart made international history aboard the Fokker F.VIIb/3m seaplane Friendship, becoming the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air. Because Earhart was living in Boston and working as a dedicated social worker at Denison House in the South End prior to the flight, her return to the city was celebrated with massive crowds, motorcades, and a grand civic reception.
The razor-sharp composition exhibits outstanding documentary and portrait detail:
Amelia Earhart in a stylish patterned cloche hat and fur-trimmed coat holding her ceremonial bouquet.
Chief pilot Wilmer Stultz (center) and flight mechanic Louis Gordon (right) standing beside her in tailored summer suits.
Chauffeur and Boston city officials in flat straw boater hats seated in the open front compartment of the parade touring car.
