1927 Temperanceville Virginia School Class Photo Students Named Antique VA 10x8
Description:Original 1927 Temperanceville, Virginia School Photograph. Wonderful original school group photograph from Temperanceville, Accomack County, Virginia, dated 1927. The photograph shows approximately two dozen schoolchildren posed with their teacher in front of a brick school building. A small slate/sign at the front appears to read:“Fourth Grade – Temperanceville – 1927”
One of the best features of this photograph is the period handwritten identification on the reverse. Several students’ names were recorded by row. The writing has faded considerably with age, and some names are difficult to decipher, so please examine the photographs carefully. I have not attempted to definitively identify every person where the handwriting is unclear.
Temperanceville School History: Temperanceville has a long educational history. A contemporary history written by a Temperanceville High School Class of 1925 student states that the community’s early private school became a public school in 1877. In 1906, A. A. Matthews donated land for a new school site. A grammar school was constructed there and subsequently expanded to ten grades and later eleven grades. The Eastern Shore Public Library also catalogs a historical publication specifically covering Temperanceville High School, 1922–1941, placing this 1927 photograph directly within the documented period of that school. Historical Eastern Shore archives contain other photographs from Temperanceville High School, including a circa-1914 school photograph and a 1929–1930 Home Economics class.

A particularly interesting piece of 1927 Eastern Shore Virginia educational and genealogical history, made much more desirable by the handwritten student identifications on the reverse.
