1927 Press Photo Gar Wood's new Speedboat Christened with Champagne in Miami For Sale

A special permit has been issued for a bottle of genuine champagne to christen this latest speedboat of Garwood, believed to be the fastest cruiser of its type in the world. It is capable of 50 miles an hour, being powered with a 1,000 horsepower motor.

Gar Wood, the legendary American businessman, inventor, and record-breaking speedboat builder, had just constructed what was considered the fastest cruiser of its type in the world. Because the launch took place during a time when alcohol was outlawed, a special government permit had to be officially issued just to allow a single bottle of genuine French champagne to be legally smashed across the hull for the traditional christening ceremony.Photo is Dated: February 7, 1927.
