Offered here is an original March 23, 1925, typed and signed letter from John McElroy (1846–1929) – Civil War veteran, Andersonville Prison survivor, noted historian, and longtime editor of the National Tribune. Written on National Tribune letterhead as Commander of the Kit Carson Post, G.A.R., the letter invites fellow veteran S. E. Faunce to attend the Post’s anniversary meeting, which would feature moving pictures of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River – an early example of film use in veterans’ gatherings. Attendance was limited to 300 guests.
McElroy’s clear ink signature appears at the bottom. The letter remains in very good condition, with minimal toning, strong typing, and no major tears. Included with the letter is a period biographical clipping detailing McElroy’s remarkable life and career.
About John McElroy:
Born August 25, 1846, in Greenup County, Kentucky.
Enlisted in McClernand’s Body Guards, later served as Acting Sergeant-Major in the 16th Illinois Cavalry.
Captured at Jonesville, VA on Jan. 3, 1864, and imprisoned at the infamous Andersonville prison until the war’s end.
Postwar career included reporter for Chicago papers, editor of the Toledo Blade, and managing editor of the National Tribune (from 1884).
Author of Andersonville (selling over 600,000 copies), Army of the Cumberland, Army of the Potomac, and other works.
Served multiple times as Commander of the Kit Carson Post, G.A.R., and held national G.A.R. leadership roles.
